Effect of large-scale population-based dietary change to vegetarianism on antimicrobial resistance and bacterial composition of sewage in Thailand
A study in Thailand found that a 10-day shift from a regular to a vegetarian diet during the annual vegetarian festival led to significant changes in AMR gene abundance and increased carbohydrate metabolism genes. The study also revealed a shift in bacterial species composition, particularly in the northern city. The findings highlight the correlation between a population’s vegetarian diet and increased AMR, providing valuable insights for public health strategies.
