Talent loss and market issues are a major threat to addressing global AMR crisis

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant global health threat, with research estimating that 40 million lives could be at risk over the next 25 years. The United Nations convened a High-Level Meeting in September to address AMR’s growing threat. The AMR Industry Alliance was formed, and progress has been made in stewardship, research and development, and responsible antibiotic manufacturing. However, a shrinking pool of antimicrobial research and development professionals threatens the pipeline for new antibiotics. The market for AMR faces unique challenges, as new antimicrobials often don’t attract investment, making it difficult for companies to create new drugs. Novel solutions, such as the UK’s subscription-based model, are needed to support researchers and meet the demand for new antibiotics.
