Strengthening clinical alliances between human and veterinary medicine to tackle global priority antimicrobial-resistant bacterial pathogens
This article discusses how antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat affecting both humans and animals, with multidrug-resistant bacteria increasingly found across clinical settings in both sectors. While the One Health framework emphasizes collaboration between human and veterinary medicine to address AMR, its practical implementation in clinical practice remains limited. The authors highlight barriers to interprofessional collaboration—such as poor communication, ambiguity around One Health concepts, and lack of policies and training—and emphasize the need for stronger integration between physicians and veterinarians to share experiences and strategies. They argue that coordinated clinical alliances are essential to effectively confront shared antimicrobial-resistant pathogens and improve prescribing practices across species.
