New White Paper: How Antimicrobial Resistance Threatens Cancer Care

  09 September 2025

AMR Insights, in collaboration with BD (Becton, Dickinson and Co.), is proud to announce the publication of the white paper “How Antimicrobial Resistance Threatens Cancer Care: Uncovering a Growing Crisis”.

This initiative was jointly led by AMR Insights and BD and reflects the expertise of Vikas Gupta, Debbie Goff, Margaret Lubwama, Afreenish Amir, Diane Flayhart, and Maarten van Dongen.

Key conclusions:

  • Cancer patients face a disproportionately high burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), with resistance rates up to three times higher compared to non-cancer patients.

  • AMR significantly increases morbidity, mortality, length of hospital stays, and costs in oncology care.

  • The risk is particularly acute in outpatient settings, where surveillance and stewardship remain limited.

  • Urgent action is needed: oncology-specific antibiograms, rapid diagnostics, environmental surveillance, and the integration of AMR into cancer care policies.

This white paper is a direct outcome of the international Roundtable webinar “How AMR Threatens Cancer Care” held on 25 June 2025. It serves as a call to action for oncologists, infectious disease specialists, policymakers, and researchers to address this under-recognized but growing global challenge.
