Is use of antimicrobial growth promoters linked to antimicrobial resistance in food-producing animals?
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat, with a growing focus on the role of antimicrobial growth promoters (AGPs) in livestock. A systematic review of 7,000 studies found a link between AGP use and AMR, leading to restrictions in some regions. However, challenges remain, including political, financial, social, and cultural issues. The review emphasizes the need for efficient surveillance systems and research into alternative AGPs, as well as sustainable practices to protect animal health and farmers’ livelihoods.
