Genomic convergence of multidrug resistance, virulence-associated loci, and phage defense systems in Klebsiella pneumoniae from pharmaceutical wastewater in Bangladesh
A highly concerning strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae was identified in treated wastewater from an antibiotic manufacturing facility in Bangladesh. This strain combines extensive multidrug resistance (to nearly all major antibiotics except carbapenems and colistin) with high virulence, carrying key genes that enhance its ability to cause disease.
Notably, it also possesses an unusually complex set of defense systems against bacteriophages, making it harder to control using alternative therapies such as phage treatment.
Overall, this “perfect storm” pathogen highlights the environment as a critical source of dangerous AMR strains and underscores the urgent need for genomic surveillance of pharmaceutical wastewater systems.
