Forecasting the Fallout from AMR: Economic Impacts of Antimicrobial Resistance in Food-Producing Animals

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health and economic threat, affecting human, animal, and plant health and making lifesaving drugs ineffective. It could cause a GDP loss of $1 trillion to 3.4 trillion annually by 2050. However, research on AMR’s economic impacts in animal health is limited, and quantifying the impact of antimicrobial use in food-producing animals on AMR in humans remains a challenge. This study aims to generate evidence on the economic burden of AMR in food-producing animals, inform response and decision-making, and support evidence-based implementation of National Action Plans (NAPs). The study will identify major economic impact pathways, estimate the global economic effects of AMR, estimate the return on investment of interventions, and identify knowledge, attitudes, and practices in low and middle-income countries.
