Flushed and Forgotten: Antimicrobial Resistance from Wastewater Perspective

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health threat, with wastewater being a significant contributor. It collects bacteria from various sources, making it a potential mitigator and a pathway for ARB and ARGs. Improper handling of wastewater leads to its environmental dissemination. In low- and middle-income countries, wastewater treatment facilities are often inadequate. Raising awareness about wastewater’s role in AMR is crucial for safeguarding global health. Strengthening wastewater treatment practices, implementing standardized monitoring systems, and integrating wastewater-based AMR surveillance into public health strategies can help mitigate the crisis.
