FAO’s work on antimicrobial resistance in agrifood systems under the 2021–2025 action plan: Progress and perspectives
FAO plays a central role in tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within the transformation of sustainable agrifood systems, covering areas such as animal and plant production, aquaculture, food safety, biodiversity, and land and water management. Through its global network, FAO supports countries in detecting, preventing, and containing AMR in line with its Action Plan on AMR. Key initiatives include the 10-year RENOFARM flagship launched in 2024 to reduce the need for antimicrobials on farms, and InFARM, a global system for harmonised farm-level AMR and antimicrobial use data. Between 2023 and 2024, FAO implemented more than 62 AMR-related projects across over 70 countries, strengthening national capacities to address AMR through sustainable agrifood systems transformation.
