Augmentation of wastewater-based epidemiology with machine learning to support global health surveillance

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is crucial for monitoring global health threats, including pathogens and antimicrobial resistances. During the COVID-19 pandemic, advanced statistical and machine learning methods were used to detect pathogens from wastewater sequencing data. However, data availability and harmonization challenges hinder method development. The paper highlights the importance of integrating WBE with other health surveillance systems.
