Few new antibiotics for children, report warns

  13 March 2026

This analysis warns that very few new antibiotics are being developed for children, despite the growing global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The pipeline of new antibiotics from major pharmaceutical companies has shrunk by about 35% since 2021, and only 14% of drugs under development are designed for children under five. As a result, many children—particularly in low- and middle-income countries and parts of Africa—may lack access to effective treatments for serious infections, highlighting the urgent need for greater investment, innovation, and improved access to child-friendly antibiotics.
