Antibiotic Resistance Patterns of Environmental Bacteria from Sewage Water in Vellore, India: Isolation, Virulence Analysis and Characterization

The rise of antibiotic resistance is a global concern, with environmental sources, particularly wastewater, playing a crucial role in the spread of resistant bacteria. A study in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India, investigated the prevalence and antibiotic resistance patterns of bacterial isolates from sewage receiving hospital wastewater. The study identified ten bacterial strains, most of which exhibited multidrug resistance (MDR), with notable variability in MIC values. Pandoraea sp. strain VITSA19 displayed the highest resistance to all tested antibiotics. The study underscores the need for integrated environmental antimicrobial resistance surveillance and improved wastewater treatment
