Antimicrobial Resistance in Fish and Fishery Products: An Emerging Threat for Public Health

  29 April 2025

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health threat, causing complications and escalating healthcare costs. Overuse in livestock production is a major driver of AMR in humans. Aquaculture fish and fishery products harbor pathogenic bacteria that can infect humans. Improper handling techniques and inadequately prepared fish contribute to AMR. Using antibiotics responsibly and adopting alternative approaches like probiotics, phage therapy, and essential oils can reduce AMR residues and address food safety issues.
