WHO report offers guidance to address antibiotic shortages and strengthen AMR response
Antibiotic shortages pose a growing threat to health systems and patients, increasing the risk of avoidable deaths and driving antimicrobial resistance. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are increasingly vulnerable due to routine stock-outs, weak surveillance, and substandard products. The World Health Organization (WHO) has provided a framework for addressing antibiotic shortages in LMICs, including short-term emergency waivers, accelerated approvals, supplier diversification, buffer stock management, improved monitoring, and regional coordination. The WHO will continue to support Indonesia in strengthening regulatory systems and ensuring consistent access to quality-assured antibiotics.
