Updated WHO dashboard offers new insights on antimicrobial resistance and use
The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched an enhanced Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) dashboard, offering interactive access to AMR and AMU data reported by 141 countries, territories, and areas between 2016–2023. The AMR section includes over 23 million infection episodes from 110 CTAs, covering eight key bacterial pathogens and resistance to 23 antibiotics, with filtering options by country, region, pathogen, and antibiotic. It also tracks national surveillance progress and presents time trends and median resistance levels. The AMU section provides global and national data on antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral, anti-tuberculosis, and antimalarial use, measured in Defined Daily Doses and categorized by WHO AWaRe classification and usage patterns. As of 2023, 98 CTAs had joined GLASS-AMU, with 73 reporting validated data; however, only 34% met the WHO target of at least 70% of antibiotic use coming from ‘Access’ antibiotics. The dashboard strengthens transparency, comparability, and evidence-based policymaking in global AMR and AMU monitoring.
