UK 2024 to 2029 antimicrobial resistance national action plan: 1-year progress report
The UK’s 2024–2029 National Action Plan (AMR NAP) sets out a One Health strategy to contain, control, and mitigate antimicrobial resistance by 2040 through nine strategic outcomes under four themes: reducing the need for antimicrobials, optimising their use, investing in innovation and access, and acting as a global partner. Informed by lessons from COVID-19 and previous plans, the AMR NAP mobilises multiple government agencies and devolved administrations, backed by 30 commitments and 503 deliverables, alongside top research priorities. The first-year progress report highlights advances in infection prevention, public engagement, surveillance, stewardship in human and animal health, and innovation such as subscription models for new antibiotics and novel diagnostics. External reviews by the National Audit Office and Public Accounts Committee stressed the urgency of strengthened monitoring, stretching targets, and attention to risks from wastewater, health inequalities, and global collaboration. Case studies demonstrate achievements in public awareness campaigns, surveillance pilots, prescribing optimisation, workforce training, international diplomacy, and research initiatives. Overall, the plan underscores the UK’s commitment to tackling AMR as a chronic risk to health, food security, the economy, and sustainable development, while ensuring accountability and global leadership.
