The role of gender in antimicrobial resistance: Findings from a scoping review

  18 August 2025

This scoping review reveals that restrictive gender norms create gender inequities in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) vulnerability, exposure, and outcomes due to gendered distribution of labor, resource access, and decision-making power structures. These norms influence access to quality healthcare, infection risk, and treatment and diagnosis. The study emphasizes the need for gender-responsive AMR policies that acknowledge these inequities and address systemic barriers to equitable access to drug-resistant infections prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
