The incidence and antimicrobial resistance of Shigella-attributable diarrhoea in young children in low-income and middle-income countries from the multicountry Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) Shigella Surveillance Study: a prospective, facility-based hybrid surveillance study
This study in examined the incidence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Shigella-related diarrhoea in young children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The researchers found that Shigella remains a major cause of diarrhoeal disease among children, with a substantial burden of illness and increasing resistance to commonly used antibiotics. The analysis also identified dominant Shigella serotypes circulating in these regions, information that is crucial for guiding vaccine development and treatment strategies. Overall, the findings highlight the urgent need for improved prevention measures—including vaccines—alongside stronger surveillance and antibiotic stewardship to better control Shigella infections in vulnerable populations.
