The epidemiology, transmission, diagnosis, and management of drug-resistant tuberculosis—lessons from the South African experience

Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is posing a significant threat to tuberculosis control efforts, especially in Africa. The disease’s widespread community transmission and lack of diagnostic tools make it difficult to diagnose and treat the disease. Structural challenges like poverty, stigma, and social distress also hinder care engagement and treatment outcomes. South Africa’s experience in implementing diagnostic solutions, rapid cure, and interventions is crucial for achieving DR-TB control.
