Human Cases of Carbapenemase-Producing Escherichia coli Linked to Spread Between Animals and the Environment in a Veterinary Facility -Massachusetts, USA, 2023

  03 October 2025

This study reports the first evidence of possible cross-species transmission of carbapenemase-producing E. coli (blaNDM-5) between humans, pets, and a veterinary hospital environment in Massachusetts. Whole genome sequencing showed human, animal, and environmental isolates were nearly identical (0–10 SNPs). While no human-to-human links were initially found, follow-up revealed that all three affected patients had pets treated at the same veterinary hospital. The findings highlight a new potential pathway for CPE spread, stressing the need for a One Health approach, stronger infection control in veterinary settings, and awareness among physicians, veterinarians, and public health professionals.
