Global trends and projections in antimicrobial resistance

The GBD 2021 Antimicrobial Resistance Collaborators’ systematic analysis provides detailed estimates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) burden across 204 countries and territories. The analysis uses extensive datasets, including hospital discharge records, microbiology data, and mortality surveillance, to model historical trends and future scenarios. However, the study faces challenges such as inherent uncertainties, data sparsity, and a focus on bacterial resistance. It emphasizes the need for global investment in antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, and developing new therapeutics.
