From Self-Medication to Antimicrobial Resistance: Socioeconomic Realities and Public Health Implications in Kibera, Nairobi
The study reveals that self-medication with antibiotics accelerates antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in informal settlements like Kibera, Nairobi. Factors like poverty, limited access to healthcare, unregulated markets, and poor sanitation contribute to antibiotic misuse. The study suggests multifaceted interventions, including regulatory enforcement, community education, health system expansion, environmental sanitation upgrades, and localized surveillance, to combat AMR. Future research should assess intervention effectiveness and develop HBM-aligned communication strategies.
