Economic assessment of an intervention strategy to reduce antimicrobial usage in small-scale chicken farms in Vietnam

The Vietnamese Platform for Antimicrobial Reduction in Chicken Production, implemented from 2016-2019, aimed to reduce antimicrobial use (AMU) in small-scale commercial poultry farms in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. The project provided farmers with locally adapted support services, including training plans, advisory visits, biosecurity, and antimicrobial replacement products. The median net farm-level benefit was VND 6.78 million per farm, with a minimum investment of VND 9.1 million per farm. The project’s success highlights the need for financial support, legislation, and information to facilitate intervention strategies to reduce AMU in poultry production.
