Closing the gap on antifungal resistance
The publication highlights that antifungal resistance is an increasingly serious but under-recognized component of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly affecting vulnerable patient populations and complicating the treatment of fungal infections. The paper emphasizes that current gaps in surveillance, diagnostics, treatment options, and coordinated global response limit effective control. It calls for strengthened international collaboration, improved diagnostics and stewardship, expanded research and development of new antifungals, and better integration of environmental and clinical perspectives (One Health). Overall, closing these gaps is essential to prevent antifungal resistance from becoming a major global health crisis alongside bacterial AMR.
