Antibiotics re-booted—time to kick back against drug resistance

Antibiotic research is gaining momentum with new funding programs focusing on new therapies. Alternatives to traditional antibiotics include potentiators of antibiotic action, bacteriophage, lysins, microbiome modulation, and innovative approaches like adaptive and innate immune modulators, CRISPR-Cas, and diagnostic guided ‘theranostics’. These therapies could break the current ‘arms race’ between bacteria and traditional antibiotics.
