Antibiotic prescribing practices, perceived constraints, and views on antimicrobial resistance among general and orthopedic surgeons in central India
India faces a high burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), with broad-spectrum antibiotics being routinely used in surgery and orthopedic departments. A study examining antibiotic prescribing practices of general and orthopedic surgeons in Central India revealed three main themes: environmental and sociocultural factors influence antibiotic decisions; infection prevention and control need strengthening; and AMR is a social problem requiring collective action. Solutions include strengthening infection prevention and control, developing contextualized guidelines, stricter regulations, and public education. The findings could inform future interventions to improve antibiotic use in Central India and beyond.
