Antibiotic prescribing and antimicrobial resistance awareness among medical students in Lebanon using novel assessment scales
The 2025 cross-sectional study assessed 164 Lebanese medical students’ awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and attitudes toward antibiotic prescribing, revealing that while overall knowledge of antibiotic use and AMR drivers was adequate and students demonstrated generally positive prescribing attitudes, significant gaps exist in understanding contextual factors influencing prudent prescribing — particularly relating to patient characteristics, pharmacists’ roles, and pharmaceutical marketing. Interns showed greater awareness of certain prescribing influences than residents, and a significant association was found between awareness of prescribing factors and AMR knowledge. The authors recommend targeted interventions, including curriculum improvements, AMR-focused workshops, stewardship training, and stronger national policies, to bolster future prescribers’ competencies and contribute to combating Lebanon’s AMR challenge.
