Establishing the pivotal role of infectious diseases and clinical microbiology professional societies: A global survey
Medical professional societies play an important role in supporting lifelong learning and could contribute significantly to infection emergencies such as pandemics and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). To explore their role, an online survey (2024) was conducted among infection-related societies worldwide.
-
Respondents: 86 societies from 62 countries.
-
Findings: Most had structured governance, memberships, and work plans, but 25 reported inadequate resources. Societies in low- and middle-income countries were generally newer and smaller. Many societies wanted to engage in AMR activities but were not formally included in national AMR strategies. Governance was usually democratic, though funding and conflict-of-interest practices varied.
-
Conclusion: Professional societies are underutilized in AMR policy and implementation. Strengthening governance, resources, and integration into national strategies—especially in LMICs—plus fostering international collaboration and mentorship, could increase their global health impact.
