Strengthening antimicrobial resistance surveillance across African military settings

  15 September 2025

This paper highlights the overlooked role of military health systems in AMR surveillance in Africa. Military personnel face high risks of drug-resistant infections due to combat injuries, overcrowding, and poor sanitation, yet national AMR strategies largely focus on civilian systems. As a result, AMR trends in military populations and conflict zones are poorly documented. The authors propose integrating military medical surveillance data into national frameworks, using models like the US Armed Forces AMR programme. Military facilities could serve as sentinel sites for resistance monitoring, while strengthening stewardship practices within military health systems would help reduce inappropriate antimicrobial use and build more effective, inclusive AMR containment strategies.
