Country preparedness for the introduction and appropriate use of antibiotics: operational guidance
WHO’s new operational guidance provides a framework for countries to plan the introduction and appropriate use of critical “Watch” and “Reserve” antibiotics, especially those for multidrug-resistant infections. The guidance supports evidence-based, coordinated planning—particularly in LMICs where access remains limited—and offers practical tools for policymakers, regulators, healthcare professionals, and program managers. Covering the full pharmaceutical value chain from decision-making and registration to implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, the guidance is part of SECURE, a joint WHO–GARDP initiative to improve global antibiotic access.
