Risk of multidrug resistance in Escherichia coli associated with routine antimicrobial prophylaxis on pig farms

  04 July 2025

The study analyzed 195 Escherichia coli strains from pigs on 13 Japanese farms and identified 61 acquired AMR genes. The farms with the highest usage of antimicrobials showed higher proportions of multidrug-resistant (MDR) genotypes. The number of frequently detected aARGs was more strongly correlated with total antimicrobial usage than with the corresponding antimicrobial classes.
