Antibiotic use among university students: insights from a Nigerian institution
The study examines antibiotic misuse among Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) undergraduates in Nigeria. Out of 400 students, 60.0% had inadequate knowledge about antibiotic use and resistance, while 33.0% had poor knowledge. The most frequently misused antibiotics were Amoxcillin, Ampiclox, and Tetracycline. A significant correlation was found between students’ antibiotic knowledge and their usage practices. The study suggests that educational interventions, such as antimicrobial stewardship programs, are essential to address the knowledge gap and misuse patterns among undergraduates.
