Selection for antimicrobial resistance in the environment
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest threats facing modern medicine and the global economy. Until recent years, the environment had been an overlooked reservoir of resistant bacteria and complex mixtures of compounds which can select for AMR. There is need to develop a standardised approach to perform risk assessment of antibiotics and other selective compounds released via human and animal waste, as evidence is building that they can increase evolution and dissemination of AMR. A novel, high through put selectivity screening assay will be introduced and its various applications outlined.
