Review on Addressing Antimicrobial Resistance in Livestock Through a One Health Approach

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health threat that affects humans, animals, and the environment. In livestock, antimicrobials are often overused for disease prevention and growth promotion, leading to the spread of resistant bacteria that can reach humans through food, contact, or the environment. This review highlights that tackling AMR from a single-sector perspective is ineffective and that a One Health approach—linking human, animal, and environmental health—is essential. However, implementation remains weak, especially in low- and middle-income countries where regulation, data, and collaboration are limited. To make real progress, countries should establish national One Health coordination platforms that unite all relevant sectors to ensure responsible antimicrobial use, harmonized surveillance, and capacity building. Lasting success will depend on strong political will, cross-sectoral cooperation, and sustained investment.
